2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon

The TSX Sport Wagon likely won't be a huge seller, but it represents an important step in the right direction for a brand that has lost its way. Like the Acuras of old, this wagon is compact, efficient, and offers real value. The base price of $31,820 slots in nicely between compacts like the Audi A3 and more powerful offerings like BMW 328i Sports Wagon and A4 Avant (both of which start around $36,000).

Like the TSX sedan, the wagon provides a more rewarding driving experience than the specs suggest, with direct steering, a capable suspension, and a willing engine. I do wish the steering had a bit more heft to it. The lack of a manual transmission is a bummer for us enthusiasts, but considering the low volumes most wagons achieve in our market, it's hard to blame Acura for not wanting to homologate multiple powertrains. The interior is simple but well insulated and convincingly premium, with nicely bolstered leather seats and soft-touch surfaces all around.

As Acura approaches its twenty-fifth year of existence, it finds itself looking up at a glass ceiling. The brand has grown well beyond its "Honda plus" roots, and yet it still trails competitors such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus in both sales and prestige.

This quandary puts quite a bit of import behind Acura's latest effort, the ZDX. At face value, it's merely another take on the coupe/crossover concept that BMW pioneered with the X6. But it's also the first production vehicle styled completely by Acura's Torrance, California, design studio, and it is blessed with the brand's most sumptuous interior to date. Most shocking, the ZDX tosses Honda's near-religious devotion to practicality to the wind, providing less utility than the MDX it's based on yet costing several thousand dollars more. No doubt, this is a brave new world for Acura.

To learn more about where the brand is headed-not to mention treat our backsides to some of the most supple leather seats we've ever experienced-we ordered a ZDX for a yearlong test. In addition to the standard 300-hp V-6, Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive, and dual moonroofs, we added the Advance package, which comes with magnetorheological dampers, navigation, and that butter-soft premium leather. Early on, we're impressed with the ZDX's sport-sedan performance but are baffled by its combination of SUV height and coupelike interior space. Time will tell if the ZDX portends a new beginning for Acura or a dead end.

Think sport utility vehicles are dead? Check out the latest sales statistics at Acura and you may change your mind. The redesigned Acura MDX luxury SUV is the top-selling product at Honda's (HMC) luxury division, well ahead of the Acura TL sport sedan. MDX sales were nearly two-thirds higher this May than in the same month a year ago and soared 51.2 percent, to 16,683, during the first five months of this year.

There's a reason for that. Dollar for dollar, the 2010 MDX is probably the best luxury SUV on the market. It has three rows of seats and a maximum capacity of seven, yet handles like a smaller, nimbler vehicle. That's partly because the MDX comes standard with Acura's terrific "super-handling" all-wheel drive system. Like other Acuras, it's also packed with performance, safety, and convenience technology, much of it standard (and much of it also found in the new Acura ZDX crossover vehicle).

Even so, the MDX's price remains relatively low. The 2010 sells for an average of about $45,000, according to the Power Information Network (PIN)—about $3,300 less than the average premium crossover SUV. Even fully loaded, the 2010 MDX tops out at a little under 55 grand.

Acura is recalling more than 160,000 TSX sedans from model years 2004 through 2008 in order to replace power steering hoses that can crack due to engine heat, which could lead to a vehicle fire.

In a recall alert filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker explains, “Prolonged high under hood temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely and may cause the hose to crack and leak power steering oil. Oil leaking onto a hot exhaust pipe will generate smoke and a burning smell, and could potentially result in an under hood fire.”

Acura dealers will replace the hoses free of charge. Dealers will begin contacting owners in late May, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements may contact Acura at 1-800-382-2238.

The power steering hose may deteriorate prematurely when exposed to prolonged high, under-hood temperatures and could crack and leak power steering oil, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Oil leaking onto a hot exhaust pipe will generate smoke and a burning smell, and could potentially result in an underhood fire," said Honda in paperwork filed with the government.

The recall is expected to begin on May 28. Honda will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicles to an Acura dealer. Acura dealers will install a new, heat-resistant hose, free of charge. Owners may contact the automaker at 800-382-8039.

With a base price of just under $52,000, Acura’s MDX mid-sized crossover is the third-most expensive model in the brand’s line-up behind the RL sedan and rakish ZDX. Yet it is also the brand’s best-seller, by far: new-vehicle buyers snapped up nearly 6,000 MDXs in 2009, which works out to more than one-third of Acura’s total sales last year, and it’s already well on its way to the same result for 2010.

Mechanically, the most meaningful improvement is the replacement of last year’s five-speed automatic transmission with a six-speed, which the MDX shares with the flashier, new-for-2010 ZDX. That makes these models the only two in the Honda/Acura portfolio to move up to a six-speed auto; this, in a segment – nay, an entire industry – that began embracing six- (and seven-, and eight-) cog gearboxes years ago.

I’ve been of the opinion all along that five gears is enough, but the bigger-better-faster-more demands of the market dictate otherwise. In any event, suffice it to say that the new transmission works well enough that I didn’t notice the extra gear until I got the car home and looked at the specs.

The 3.7-litre engine is the same as the MDX has used since that 2007 redesign. Like Honda/Acura’s other V6s, it’s a gem, with good power and a great soundtrack when under the pressure of a heavy right foot. If the new transmission’s extra gear brings any direct benefit, it’s in lower rated fuel consumption. The 2010 MDX’s Natural Resources Canada numbers are 13.2/9.6 L/100 km (city/highway), compared to 13.8/10.0 in 2009. My tester returned an average of 15.3 in mostly city driving, just about matching a 2007 model I tested.

Honda Motor Co. is recalling about 167,000 Acura TSX cars to fix power steering hoses that could deteriorate and cause a fire under the hood.

The recall, announced Friday, involves TSXs from the 2004-2008 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website that high temperatures under the hood could cause the power steering hose to crack and leak power steering oil.

The oil can leak onto a hot exhaust pipe and cause smoke and a burning smell, or even a fire.

Honda spokesman Chris Naughton said the automaker had received one report of a minor fire connected to the issue. He said there have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

The Japanese automaker said the recall is expected to begin in late May. Dealers will replace the power steering hose and seal it at no charge.

We usually dismiss this type of jargon as marketing gimmickry, but in the case of the 2010 Acura MDX, we're inclined to label it as justified. Unlike many of the luxury crossovers from domestic and Asian manufacturers, the MDX will satisfy a wide variety of drivers on many levels, a feat we usually equate with European brands.

Our 2010 Acura MDX test vehicle, in Advance Entertainment dress, represents the fully loaded trim level, and rings in about $11,500 more than the base model. Priced in the mid-$50,000 range, this MDX competes against the elite luxury crossovers from Germany. Fortunately for Acura, the latest improvements to the drivetrain and upgrades to the interior and technological gadgetry have the MDX giving the lofty competition a run for its money.

In terms of price, performance and features, the 2010 Acura MDX compares favorably against the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne. At this level, brand equity figures into the equation quite heavily, and in this arena Acura comes up a bit short. However, the smart shopper should note that when you outfit any of these German utes with the same features as this MDX, the price begins to climb farther out of reach. Needless to say, the 2010 Acura ZDX is a peculiar beast. And after a week's worth of testing, we're still not sure what to make of it.

But just for some context, let's begin with the fact that despite a similar fastback, five-door body style, the ZDX is not related to the Honda Accord Crosstour. Honda's jacked-up hatch is substantially larger than the ZDX and far more useful. Instead, it's best to think of the ZDX as a rake-roofed version of the MDX – a high-riding four-door coupe (assuming you buy into the marketing spiel) akin to its closest competitor, the BMW X6. Both models share similar designs and purposes – although the ZDX maxes out in price and performance where the German starts off – and both possess some of the attributes of a two-door layout – compromises and all.

MDX is the largest of the "X" or all-wheel-drive crossover utility vehicles Acura brings to the Canadian market and it is manufactured in Alliston, Ont.

The largest of the Acura crossovers, MDX has been freshened up for 2010.

Up front, Acura has put in their signature grille and made some other changes to the front fascia, fenders and hood.

There has been a little cosmetic tweaking of the sides by changing the side sills. At the rear, tail lights have a new shape and brighter LEDs installed. The lower rear fascia is now sculpted around the dual polished stainless steel exhaust tips giving a bit of a classy look to a rather large tail.

Improvements that you can't see start with an increase in displacement of the V6 to 3.7 litres. Add to that a revised engine block that is stiffer than before, uses a high-strength crankshaft, heavy duty rods and high compression pistons.

On top of that is a revised cylinder head with better cooling, new intake valve springs, new EGR system, unique longer reach spark plugs and a larger throttle body. All this is done to keep up with Acura's pledge to provide V8 power from a V6. At 300 h.p. and 270 lb./ft. of torque, the company has fulfilled its mandate.

Other improvements such as throttle by wire, variable valve lift and timing on the intake cam and a computer controlled dual stage induction system; Acura has broadened the torque curve so there is more useable power throughout the power band. In addition to the power increases, Acura has improved fuel economy over the previous MDX as well.

Honda has issued a recall of about 1,850 Acura ZDX vehicles from the 2010 model year, according to the automaker.

The recall is to inspect the dashboard surface material, which may prevent the passenger-side airbag from deploying during an accident. There have been no reported incidents of this, but a manufacturing quality check found that some vehicles don’t have the proper laser-cut scoring on the underside of the material. Without this scoring, the airbag might not deploy.

After the inspection, the dealer will replace the dashboard if it doesn’t have this scoring.

2010 Acura TL SH-AWD 6MT Significant revisions to spring and damper rates help turn the 6MT into a veritable master of back roads. The ride is on the busy side, but that's a small price to pay for phenomenal body control and composure. Michelin tires generate ludicrous levels of grip, and Acura's torque-vectoring 2010 Acura TL SH-AWD 6MT system can send up to 70 percent of the engine's power to a single rear wheel. The top TL explodes out of corners without a trace of understeer or the old Type-S's torque steer and wheel spin. The TL is smoking fast over curvy, broken pavement - literally, as the brakes quickly reach their heat capacity.

The perfectly weighted, short-throw shifter is pure Honda heaven - no other car company does shift feel this well. The 6MT's clutch, though, is another story. The soupy clutch pedal engages gradually, but inconsistently, throughout most of its travel - and, worse, the gas pedal is a hypersensitive all-or-nothing affair. That's exactly the reverse of how it should be, making smooth shifts all but impossible at around-town speeds.

It's much easier to be smooth when you're railing on this Acura. And that's exactly the reason that the TL SH-AWD 6MT exists. It may not have a catchy name, but it has the best chassis tuning of any Acura since the Integra Type-R (two more discontinued labels), and that's what matters.

“First, I give major kudos for the technology side of the car and cockpit feel. Having owned a 2005 TL, I was looking forward to upgrading to the all-wheel-drive TL with Tech.

“Disappointments:

“1) The shape of trunk opening: not very functional. The angled edges makes larger boxes difficult, if not impossible, to get in. it’s a serious let down for the exterior design.

“2) Rear seat pass-through only: Even the TSX has a 60/40-split folding rear seat for greater utility. I don't see why the TL can't have one, too. Most sedans in this class offer this either standard or at least as an option.

“3) Bucktooth beak: I can't take it anymore. The previous style was classy or at least not so extreme.

“I am looking forward to seeing how the 2011 TSX wagon looks and performs. If it is available in AWD V6 Tech package, I will be probably trade in the TL.

“Overall, if you need all-wheel drive and practical functionality combined with performance, I recommend waiting to compare the TSX wagon with some sport wagons or at least all-wheel-drive sedans that don't have the limitations mentioned above.

drive the ZDX, and I enjoyed my entire experience. I was, let me say, up around Monterey and Carmel in California, enjoying a fabulous couple of days of sightseeing, dining, and staying at the wonderful Post Ranch Inn. It was a luxurious vacation experience in the lavishly appointed and trimmed ZDX, a car that follows in the design shadow of the ungainly BMW GTs, cars I find grotesquely unattractive. The second I set eyes on the ZDX, I gasped audibly. But on second glance (when I opened my scrunched eyes), the ZDX was definitely more shapely and better proportioned. And I quickly got used to driving it on the twisty narrow roads around Carmel Valley and south on Highway 1.

Now the ZDX is in our garage. It looks tall, narrow, and ungainly. Inside, it is narrow, high-cowled, and the roof feels confining. At night, the console lights are too numerous and difficult to sort in usable groups, although I know that any owner would become quickly familiar with everything. We'll find that out for sure when we take delivery of a Four Seasons test ZDX shortly. It was snowing and cold, and the ZDX became my immediate boon companion on the highway. By day, the interior becomes less confusing, and the materials are as sumptuous as I remember from last year's drive.

With Acura's decision to nix V8 power and rear-wheel drive in favor of new hybrid drivetrains, dealers are worried that the brand's relentless pursuit of Tier 1 status – on par with Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz – may be threatened. But that's not the real news.

Buried at the end of an Automotive News piece about a recent Acura dealer meeting was this gem:

"[Jeff Conrad, vice president of the Acura division] confirmed that Acura is considering a small car below the TSX sedan. The vehicle not only would compete against the BMW 1 series, Audi A3 and Volvo C30 but also would help meet looming CAFE regulations."

With the TSX's growth spurt, a smaller offering from the automaker could be in order, and judging by the competition, that could mean the rebirth of the RSX. Then again, Acura could pull a CSX (an upgraded Civic for the Canadian market) or maybe even a CR-Z-based offering. Judging by the choice wording, we somehow doubt the former is in the cards, but with Acura's recent hybrid push, something with a gas-electric drivetrain seems likely.

2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L AWD

The new Honda Accord Crosstour looks weird. Its nose is too long, its roofline a little too low, and the back end comes from outer space, with no known automotive predecessor. If an elephant sat on an SUV, you might end up with something like the Crosstour. But weird is not necessarily bad.

The 2010 Crosstour is undeniably functional; the rear hatch has inserts that lets it be either a large cargo space or a traditional closed trunk. And once in the driver's seat, the car feels like a Honda Accord, until you look in the rear-view mirror. With its horizontally bisected rear glass, the view out the back looks the same as in a Prius or Insight.

The Crosstour that we reviewed was in EX-L trim, with the surprising addition of all-wheel drive. As we drove it up a rocky embankment to position it for a photo shoot, it began to feel like a capable off-road vehicle, high enough from the ground not to bottom out on a ridge. With the Crosstour, Honda is stepping into Subaru's market, offering a carlike all-wheel driver with enough cabin room for weekend ski trips.

In EX-L trim, the cabin features wood trim, leather seats, and generally soft plastics covering every surface. The effect falls a little short of luxury, but it is nicely done overall. Familiar to us from many drives in Acuras was the large knob in the center of the stack, below the navigation LCD. This knob works as a joystick and dial to make selections onscreen. The Crosstour dashboard and steering wheel also suffer from button overload, a disease caught from Acura as well.

Unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, the most powerful version of the Acura's premium sports sedan is fitted with a 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 that's coupled to a Sequential SportShift automatic transmission with steering-wheel mounted F1-style paddle shifters. And no, Acura did not equip the TSX V6 with its four-wheel-drive system as it retains the 4-cylinder model's front-wheel drive layout.

The V6 powertrain also brought along a sportier suspension tuning along with 18-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, fit with Michelin Pilot all-season tires. To distingush it from the 4-cylinder variant, Acura slightly revised the TXS's front fascia and added a V6 badge on the trunk.

It's quite amazing what the addition of a single letter and a single number to the rear trunk area has done for the Acura TSX, already one of the better front-wheel-drive sport sedans around. Of course, it's not the affixing of the V followed by the 6 to the hind end that does the transforming but what the alpha-numeric designation signifies - that Honda has finally dropped a V6 engine into the compact four-door.

The V6 in question is a 3.5-litre SOHC unit that develops a robust 280 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Putting this into perspective, that's nearly 40% more horses for the TSX than the base, high-revving, 201-hp 2.4L four-cylinder. The added power, says Honda, comes courtesy of a high 11.2:1 compression ratio, VTEC valvetrain control and a dual-stage induction system contained within a lightweight magnesium intake manifold. And, while most won't give a care for the engineering explanation, what they will care about is the strong mid-range oomph instantly available with a prod of the gas pedal. It's a linear torque curve, Honda says, with emphasis on the rpm range most commonly used during day-to-day driving.

Indeed, where the four-cylinder TSX would best be described as balanced, the V6 definitely emphasizes the word sporting, with a healthy shove in the back seat and a rapid increase in acceleration when the pedal is mashed. Hitting 100 kilometres an hour from a standstill takes about six seconds, a good 1.5 seconds faster than with the four-banger. However, taking the car out for regular exercising exacts a penalty at the pumps. I averaged a thirsty 12.6 litres per 100 kilometres of premium unleaded during my week with the tester.

Review – 2010 Acura ZDX

The Acura ZDX is a sporty crossover designed to mimic the styling of a sports coupé. It is based on the same platform employed by Acura’s largest vehicle, the MDX. In the ZDX, the roofline sits a half feet lower than the MDX, and it sports five seats as opposed to the MDX, which can seat seven. It is longer than the MDX by a couple of inches. The ZDX falls into the newly created segment of cars, which was created by BMW with the X6. More and more manufacturers have started to venture into this previously unknown segment, with cars that offer the practicality and high driving position of an SUV while wearing a sporty design similar to a sports coupé.

Styling

The ZDX wears the familiar Acura chrome grille at the front, which now looks more aggressive than any other models made by the company. The Acura looks handsome from which ever angle it is viewed from, but looks especially brilliant in profile. The slopping roofline, blackened B-pillar, and the neatly hidden rear door handles make it look more like a large sports coupé. The 19 inch seven spoke wheels match the size of the car and add to the sporty appeal of the car.

Even though the car can seat five people comfortably, the rear seats are not as spacious as one would expect from a car of its size. The ZDX has by and far, the best interiors even seen in an Acura. The leather lined cabin and the elegant carpets gives rich aura to the interiors. The passengers are pampered with a long list of standard equipments. The list gets even longer with the addition of the optional packages.

Performance

The car is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.7 liter engine that runs only on premium quality gasoline. Drive

Despite the huge size of this car, it handles more like a sporty sedan. The all wheel drive system aids the car’s handling, while the Integrated Dynamics System allows the damper and the power steering settings to be altered to be sporty or comfortable, depending on the mode selected. The IDS and the brilliant all wheel drive system makes this car amazingly fun to drive. The optional adaptive cruise control allows relaxed cruising though the motorways.

Safety

The ZDX leaves no stones unturned when it comes to safety. The car has a total of six airbags to protect its occupants in the event of a crash. ABS, brake assist, traction control and ESP are standards in the car. It has active head restraints for the front seat to reduce injury to the neck in the even of a rear end collision. The advance package includes a collision mitigation system that uses radar to prevent collision. The system warns the driver, and then prepares the seat belts and finally brakes automatically in order to prevent the car from crashing into the one in front.

Overall

The Acura ZDX is a brilliant car that is fun to drive, good looking and extremely safe. However, the fun is limited only to the front two seats as the rear seats lack in both legroom and headroom.

Acura sets price of 2010 ZDX at $45,495; On sale Dec. 15

Acura’s all-new 4-door sports coupe, the 2010 ZDX, has an official on sale date of Dec. 15 with an MSRP of $45,495, which does not include another $81o for handling and delivery.

Since it debuted at this past April’s New York Auto Show, the American designed and American-manufactured stands out with its styling and performance numbers.

“Acura dealers are seeing strong interest from customers for the ZDX well before its official on-sale date,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales in a press release. “The ZDX is like nothing you have ever seen before from Acura.”

Birds and bats both have wings, for example, but they evolved from very different lineages. Like humans and other primates, Wall Street bankers have 10 fingers and toes, even though they evolved from disgusting, invertebrate slugs.

In the last couple of years, BMW, Porsche, Honda and VW/Audi have all separately arrived at a wagon/coupe/crossover solution because they are all dealing with the same retail ecology. For one thing, many buyers are maturing out of their cretinous SUVs and crossovers. They want something sporty and coupe-like but they still want the commanding outward view and some modicum of utility.

For another: Product development systems are now so streamlined that carmakers are able to cheaply riff off established chassis, offering subspecies of vehicles to make sure they have something in the showroom for everybody. BMW, for instance, has grafted a fastback rear end to its 5-series sedan to make the 5-series GT. To me it looks like the car has developed an egg sac.

The latest and, I assert, the greatest of these efforts is the Acura ZDX, a ferociously dynamic, red-in-tooth-and-claw styling exercise from Acura's Torrance design studio.

If only this major-league body didn't have a minor-league chassis to go with it.

This is the first Acura designed, engineered and being built in North America (Alliston, Ontario. That's Canada. Can you smell the bacon?).

The ZDX's Yankee designers -- all trained at Art Center in Pasadena -- have managed to transcend the dictates of the marketing weenies to make what I think is a lasting contribution to the designed world. Forget the modernism of the Tokyo skyline. The more you look at this thing the more you expect it to have a license plate from Alpha Centauri.

At first glance, East Liberty, Ohio is one of those sleepy, blink-and-you'll-miss-it midwestern towns, the kind you find buried in every county from Columbus to Kankakee. Then, on the outskirts of town, you round a corner and come face-to-face with an eighteen-wheeler cranking across an enormous banked oval. And a dump truck on a skidpad. And a small, diabolical little road course with more off-camber corners than you can shake a Snell sticker at. Welcome to the Transportation Research Center, otherwise known as TRC.

Acura invited us here for a track-only drive of its TL SH-AWD 6MT prototype, a car that by all rights shouldn't exist. The 6MT bit is the interesting part; it stands for six-speed manual transmission, and the SH-AWD acronym represents Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The combination - the most powerful model Acura offers, paired with electronically controlled all-wheel drive and a clutch pedal - is enticing on paper, but in an age of declining manual-transmission sales, it's also a little perplexing. If you're shooting for greater sales and a broader demographic, why bother building a destined-to-be-low-volume car for a rapidly shrinking market?

Predictably, the (lovably impractical) answer can be found in one word: gearheads. A handful of renegade Acura engineers installed a three-pedal setup into an early production TL (the car is currently available only with an automatic) and begged management to drive it. After a little track time, the suits went nuts. We were asked to come to Ohio on the grounds that a manual gearbox transformed the hottest version of Acura's TL, and that the added wait and development cost (an extra twelve months of R&D; the manual TL won't go on sale until fall of 2009) would be worth it. Frankly, we were more than a little skeptical.

Acura Takes A 1-2 Victory Sweep

Acura's new LMP2-spec ARX-02a prototype race car has been making quite an impression since its entrance into the 2009 American Le Mans Series. A couple of weeks ago, the new race car first caught media attention by qualifying in the pole position before the Sebring season opener, beating out top tier competitors Audi and Peugeot. While the actual race was a different story, the ARX-02a's performance in its debut qualifier was still something to be remembered.

This weekend marked the second round of the American Le Mans Series, which was rightfully named the Acura Sports Car Challenge. The race took place on a temporarily track through the streets of St. Petersburg and luckily for Acura, Audi and Peugeot decided to sit this race out. The result? Drivers David Brabham and Scott Sharp took the Acura ARX-02a prototype straight to the top and won the race with a 32-second victory. To make things even better, the 32-second victory was over the LMP1-spec'd Acura ARX-01b race car, which marked the first time in 10 years that an auto manufacturer took wins in both the LMP1 and LMP2 class in the same event.

Congratulations to Acura and their drivers for a fine performance this Le Mans weekend!

the ZDX is the first truly American Acura vehicle. From the first sketches by lead designer Michele Christensen at the Torrance Design Studio to the final production model, unveiled at the Orange County Auto Show today, the ZDX promises utility wrapped in coupe-like curves.

Though new information on the vehicle is not yet forthcoming, the photography previews what we'll all be able to see on Acura lots starting this winter.

First unveiled at the New York Auto Show this March, the ZDX's unconventional form factor has met mixed reception from critics and car shoppers alike, though Acura has forged ahead, determined that this is the car Americans truly want.

Filling out Acura's range between the MDX suv and RL sedan, the ZDX should start somewhere around $40,000-$46,000. The EPA estimates the ZDX's fuel economy at a rather un-frugal 16/22 mpg, but with a 3.7-liter, 300-horsepower V-6 under the hood and Acura's Super-Handling all-wheel drive (SH-AWD) layout, it's likely to pack an entertaining punch.

2010 Acura ZDX Makes Official Production

The Orange County Auto Show may not be on your radar--it may not be on anyone's radar--but that's where Acura chose to officially release the production version of the 2010 ZDX coupe/sedan/crossover.

Not much new info accompanies the car's production debut, though the photography gives us an incredibly detailed look at all its nooks and crannies as they'll be when the ZDX hits showroom floors this winter. The ZDX was initially unveiled at the New York Auto Show back in March, but the design wasn't officially production-ready at that point.

The ZDX will be positioned between the MDX SUV and RL sedan according to Acura, putting it's likely retail price somewhere between $40,000 and $46,000 to start. EPA estimated fuel economy is tipped to hit 16/22 mpg.

Acura and Porsche take inaugural ALMS Green Challenge championship

Season 1 of the American Le Mans Series' Michelin GreenX Challenge is now in the books with Acura and Porsche taking the inaugural season championship. The 2009 season wrapped up at Laguna Seca this weekend with Gil de Ferran taking overall victory in the Acura ARX-02a and the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche 911.

However, it was the LMP2 class Acura ARX-01b of Fernandez racing that took Green honors among the prototypes after finishing second overall to de Ferran. The Fernandez car has been running strong all season The second of the two Flying Lizard Porsches, driven by Johannes van Overbeek and Seth Neiman, had the best combination of performance, efficiency and emissions among the production-derived GT cars both at Laguna and over the whole season.

First Drive: 2010 Acura ZDX

The Canadian-built ZDX is the first vehicle designed by Acura’s new and autonomous North American studio in Torrance, California. Even though it has four doors, Acura calls the ZDX a “luxury four-door sports coupe,” (front doors are larger than the rear doors, and rear door handles are hidden, contributing to the coupe theme) but that really doesn’t capture the essence of this vehicle.

Nomenclature aside, Acura describes the ZDX as a vehicle for the “passionate getaway,” ideally suited for two adults and their cargo. It’s targeted to couples, empty nesters, and singles-on-the-go; people who are at a point in their lives where they don’t need or want a conventional SUV (let alone a minivan!) and the “practicality first” mentality that such vehicles can imply. I think the ZDX is more about a state of mind than anything else.

Based on the 2010 Acura MDX SUV, the ZDX is likewise powered by the same high-compression (11.2:1) 3.7-litre, V6 that makes 300-horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 270 pound-feet torque at 4,800 rpm. Equipped with Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), the ZDX introduces an all-new, paddle-shifting six-speed automatic transmission that uses “Grade Logic Control” to reduce gear “hunting” when climbing hills, and “Cornering G Shift Control” to reduce unwanted gear shifting when cornering.

In comparison with the MDX, the ZDX is 57 kilograms lighter (2,064 kg vs 2,007 kg) 137 millimetres lower (1,733 mm vs 1,595 mm), but is almost identical in length, width and ground clearance. Towing capacity, however, drops from 5,000 pounds to 1,500.

Standard and Technology Package models will be available, with standard equipment including leather seating, leather wrapped steering wheel, power liftgate, rearview mirror with rearview camera display, 10-way power driver’s seat and eight-way power passenger seat, heated front and outboard rear seats, eight-speaker audio with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, panoramic roof and LED interior illumination.

Though I'm not really down with Acura's new styling direction, this car was and remains a good driver, one of the more underrated cars in the midsize luxury class, I'd argue.

The V6 is smooth like a Honda, and 300 hp is a good number for this car. The interior is well built, the seats are among the best in the business and the materials are as nice the competitions' except for perhaps Audi. Acura has the other automakers covered in my book.

I love Honda's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system (I wish Honda could come up with a cooler name, but the system is terrific). In the middle of a wet corner, you can jump on the gas and the car will just track around. It seems the harder one pushes the car, the better it works, though I question how many owners will get the car to a cornering level where the system's benefits can really be felt. The whole driving experience is creamy smooth.

I turned off the collision-warning control that, when it senses a possible crash, taps the brakes and cinches the belt. It bugged me. The distance-measuring cruise control drove me nuts, too. I hate those systems.

This is one of the sleeper cars in the mid-level (if $50 grand is mid-level) luxury category. The powertrain is super smooth, the handling is very good for an AWD car, and the overall comfort level--from the seats to the ride--is very, very good. Honda has taken some due criticism for the styling of its cars, and this thing has a face that only its mother could really love. But luckily, you can't see the outside while driving the car, and driving it is where the real pleasure is.

Provocative Four-Door Sports Coupe Goes On-Sale Fall of 2009

A prototype of the provocative 2010 Acura ZDX luxury four-door sports coupemade its world debut at the New York International Auto Show. The production version of the dramatically styled prototype goes on-sale in the fall of 2009. The segment bending ZDX features stunning coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility.

The ZDX is designed to break new ground for Acura in the areas of provocative styling, contemporary luxury and meticulous refinement. With its sensuous curves, sharply raked roofline and bold fender flares, the ZDX blurs the distinction between coupe, sedan and sport utility vehicle. Clean, flowing lines start from the headlights and run the length of the car, accentuating the cars presence and grace. In keeping with the coupe-inspired styling, the rear door handles are cleverly concealed in the C-pillar. The all-glass tailgate opens wide to reveal a highly functional cargo space with integrated under-floor storage. The prototype is finished off with stylish dual chrome exhaust outlets and 9-spoke machined wheels fitted with 20-inch Michelin tires.

"From the very first sketch of the ZDX, I wanted to create an emotional vehicle that challenged conventional thinking of what a sports coupe should be," said Michelle Christensen, ZDX exterior designer. 2010 Acura ZDX, another of the recent rash of coupelike crossover vehicles. On sale this winter for about $42,500 base, the new ZDX slots between the Acura RL sedan and its big seven-passenger MDX crossover.

The 2010 ZDX shares some mechanicals with the big MDX crossover, but gets a coupelike body more suited to its seductive mission. The rear end has a muscular appeal, and the side view does all it can to convince you it's a coupe. Up front, the big, controversial Acura shield grille gets its most attractive installation yet. But there's something about this class of vehicles that just doesn't work in TheCarConnection.com's eyes. Some reviewers have moderate praise for the ZDX's styling. CNET calls Acura's latest MDX derivative "a mash-up of sedan, SUV, and sports coupe," while USA Today points out "a tucked and tailored roof covered in black glass panels and...rear-wheel bulges that would be striking even if the roof's taper did not accentuate them." Car and Driver considers the Acura "endearingly weird, the sort of vehicle you might expect Citroen to produce," though whether you find that charming or off-putting is a matter of personal preference. On the positive side, most reviewers agree with CNET's assessment that "the grille, which stands out like a beak on the smaller Acura sedans, seems to have found its medium" on the 2010 Acura ZDX.

Acura says its new Canadian-built (in Alliston, Ont.) ZDX crossover is a four-door sports coupe. A coupe, by definition, has only two doors. That said, the ZDX has an athletic form that mimics the swept-back style of a Grand Tourer - the rear door handles are blended into the black trim at the roofline and so they are more or less invisible. In the end, the ZDX is destined to be a love it or hate it affair. Regardless, the ZDX has the sort of road presence that's impossible to ignore. In trendy Los Angeles, it was definitely a love thing.

The sharp exterior style flows into the cabin. It starts with the generous swaths of leather that wrap all major surfaces and run through to the level of equipment. Standard stuff includes a 10-way power driver seat, eight-way power passenger seat, a huge panoramic glass roof, which opens up the cabin enormously even when the glass panel is closed, and a 253-watt audio system that includes the needed auxiliary inputs. It comes together such that the only available option is the technology package. It upgrades the leather to perforated Milano and adds a navigation system, backup camera, push-button start and a much sweeter 435-watt sound system with 10 well-placed speakers and a 15-gigabyte hard drive for music storage. This option will not likely be cheap, but it is money well spent.

The nit to pick is the busy nature of the driver's environment. There are 12 buttons on the steering wheel, many of which serve two functions, plus a pair of column-mounted stalks, the horn pad and paddle shifters. Then there's the centre stack. The technology package squeezes no fewer than 36 buttons, a volume knob, rotary ring and enter button in the cascading facade. The good news is that it is nowhere near as intimidating to use as it seems at first blush.

As for the rest of it, the heated outboard rear seats will accommodate two adults in comfort - three is a squeeze best left for emergencies - and it does so with surprising headroom. Aft of that, the ZDX brings the needed versatility. Raising the power liftgate reveals 26.3 cubic feet of cargo space; dropping the 60/40-split/folding rear seats bumps the capacity to 55.8 cu. ft. There's also a handy under-floor storage bin and two storage pockets in the cargo area sidewalls.

The extensive use of sound-deadening materials and an acoustic windshield makes the ZDX a quiet ride. What does filter back into the cabin is dealt with by an active noise cancellation system. It sets up a white noise wave that counters the obnoxious noise pattern, bringing the desired peace.

Beauty, however, must be more than skin deep. A brawny 3.7-litre V6 engine powers the ZDX. The use of Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) on the intake delivers 300 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm. As the power is available over a broad range, there is never a lack of oomph, even when climbing some of the steep canyon roads around Malibu.

A big part of the reason for the alacrity is down to the new six-speed automatic transmission. The broader ratio span keeps the engine operating at its optimum for more of its working life. It also comes with paddle shifters. The advantage is that they work regardless of whether the shifter is in the drive or sport mode. When in drive, pulling back on the downshift paddle drops a gear quickly, which brings the necessary engine braking. If the driver leaves the paddles alone, the box reverts to its automatic mode. The rest of the operational logic also means the box doesn't downshift mid-corner, nor does it hunt on a long climb. The sport mode holds each gear a little longer, which accentuates the sporty nature of the ZDX.

From the transmission, the drive is directed to the road through large P255/50R19 tires and Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). The system not only splits the power front to rear, it has the ability to overspeed the outside rear wheel in a corner. This action turns the ZDX into the corner, which reduces the amount of steering input required and reduces the likelihood of the stability control system stepping up to bat.

In the twisty bits through the canyons, the ZDX put on a fine show, feeling more like a larger version of the TL than a derivative of the MDX, with which it shares its platform. The suspension (front struts and multiple rear links) dials out unwanted body roll without feeling harsh when the pavement deteriorates. Likewise, the response to steering input is crisp and precise, although a faster ratio would not go amiss. Even when flirting with the limits of adhesion, the ZDX retains its balanced driving feel.
