Just when you thought you’d seen every crossover vehicle the world could accommodate, Acura has introduced a model intended to stand the segment on its ear. The Acura ZDX is a provocative crossover utility and a test case for what Acura hopes to achieve in the future, namely a more distinct place on the exterior design map. The four-door, five-passenger ZDX has attention-getting styling befitting a luxury coupe, while offering some of the utility and the chair-high seating of a crossover. It’s a go-anywhere vehicle that is as appropriate for charging up a gravel fire road or attending an opening of the ballet. Based on the mechanicals of the Acura MDX crossover SUV, the ZDX is dramatically different with a look that springs virtually full-blown from a concept vehicle that drew a lot of comments on the auto-show circuit. Among the touches from that concept vehicle that made it through to the production car are the 5-inch lower roofline, the edge-to-edge glass roof and the hidden rear-door handles that will baffle your friends.
